My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia shouldn't work as well as it does. A shonen series about a boy who wants to be a hero in a world full of them sounds like it would collapse under the weight of its own familiarity. What Horikoshi did instead was use every familiar piece of the genre as a foundation for something genuinely moving. Deku isn't compelling because he gets a superpower. He's compelling because he already was the most heroic person in the room before he had anything.

The fandom has stayed invested through every arc because MHA keeps raising the stakes on its own premise. What does heroism actually cost?
